Sheena Lambert • Cosima
Sheena Lambert’s one woman show Cosima, based on her feature screenplay, will play at Smock Alley Theatre this July, 2024.
A must-see for anyone with a passing interest in classical music, Cosima Wagner’s life, like that of so many other women of her time, was eclipsed by her more famous father Franz Liszt and husband, Richard Wagner. But Richard Wagner’s fame had as much to do with the woman he married as his own talent; certainly the enduring success of the annual Bayreuth Wagner Music Festival may be attributed to this woman whose own musical ambitions were thwarted by the one person who should have been her greatest cheerleader…
Now, this exciting, surprising production, starring the incredible Mary Murray and directed by Rex Ryan, gives Cosima the chance to set the record straight.
“Cosima Wagner has always been a footnote in musical history: a Daughter Of/Wife Of,” says writer Sheena Lambert. “But she was so much more. Sassy, bigoted, a genius – a woman who refused to go quietly, whose ambition and ruthlessness we easily associate with men, but rarely with 19th century ladies. I am beyond thrilled to see her come to life on the Smock Alley stage through the wonderful Mary Murray, under the baton of Rex Ryan.”
“Cosima Wagner had about as interesting a life as anyone who didn’t found a religion or personally lead an invasion of a foreign empire.” – Philip Hensher, Telegraph (2010)
