WGI is delighted to hear the news of the 14 Irish nominations for this year’s Academy Awards.

Colm Bairéad’s An Cailín Ciúin received its Academy Award nomination for Best International Feature Film. It is the first Irish-language film to be nominated in this category, selected from 92 eligible countries.

Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin received 9 nominations, which is a record for most nominations for an Irish film. The short film An Irish Goodbye was nominated for Best Live Action Short.

Irish actors Paul Mescal, Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan each received nominations in the acting categories. 

Irish VFX artist Richard Baneham was nominated for Best Visual Effects on Avatar: The Way of Water. Irish editor Jonathan Redmond co-nominated with Matt Villa for Best Film Editing on Elvis.

The 95th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 12, 2023.
