Moral Rights Factsheet

Points to bear in mind.
  • Moral rights waivers are an unavoidable part of screenwriting contracts. They give producers complete freedom to alter your work.
  • In the English-speaking markets, a screenplay is unfinanceable without a clean ‘chain of title’ that a moral rights waiver provides but that is not the case in European productions where moral rights cannot be waived.
  • Producers are attempting to introduce further waivers on other new rights that they will try to assert are equally essential (but are not).
  • Get advice before signing a contract from the WGI.
