BBC Writers has announced changes to the application process for its professional development programmes for 2026/27, with the aim of making applications simpler for emerging writers across the UK and Republic of Ireland.

Previously, the BBC Writers’ Access Group had its own separate application window. Under the new approach, deaf, disabled and neurodivergent (DDN) writers will no longer need to submit separate applications to both the Open Call and the Writers’ Access Group if they want to be considered across the full range of BBC Writers’ talent development programmes.

The submission routes will instead be brought together through the Open Call, creating a more streamlined application process while embedding access and inclusion more fully across BBC Writers’ talent development work.

Open Call Dates for 2026

The next BBC Writers Open Call submission window will run from Tuesday, 3 November 2026 to Tuesday, 1 December 2026 at 12 noon.

BBC Writers is encouraging writers interested in applying to read the latest blog from Jess Loveland, Head of New Writing, which provides further information about the changes. The blog also includes dates for a number of online drop-in sessions for writers who have questions about the new application process.

The changes form part of BBC Writers’ continuing commitment to discovering and developing new writing talent across the UK and Republic of Ireland.

Writers interested in BBC professional development opportunities should review the updated application information and prepare ahead of the November 2026 Open Call.
