WGI Chair Jennifer Davidson Calls for Meaningful Investment in Women Writers
Screen Daily has published a report from the recent ‘Ten Years of the 50/50 Gender Equality Campaign: Where Are We Now?’ discussion hosted by WFT Ireland at this year’s Galway Film Fleadh, where Writers’ Guild of Ireland Chair Jennifer Davidson made a compelling case for greater investment in female writers.
This essential industry discussion was moderated by Dr Susan Liddy, Women in Film and Television International (WIFTI) President and Women in Film and Television (WFT) Ireland Chair and featured Martina Durac, Executive Director, Screen Directors Guild of Ireland (SDGI), Jennifer Davidson, Chair, Writers’ Guild of Ireland, Aisling Malone, Project Manager, Raising Films Ireland, Lara Hickey, Co- creative Director, X-Pollinator, and Grace Odumosu, Producer, Raising Films Ireland, GORM Media, Catalyst International Film Festival
Speaking at the panel, Jennifer argued that while mentorship, development schemes and low-budget initiatives are important, “that does not build sustainable careers for female and diverse filmmakers, they have got to be able to afford to make a living”. Instead, she called for women to be trusted with larger productions and properly funded opportunities, urging the industry to move beyond mentorship towards meaningful investment.
