The Irish Playwrights and Screenwriters Guild is a company limited by guarantee under Irish law, registration number 350341. It is the representative body for writers for the stage, screen and radio in Ireland.
The guild has decided at its Annual General Meeting on 21st April 2007 to institute a system of annual awards to writers in honour of O. Z. (Zebbie) Whitehead, (who sponsored play-writing awards for the Guild for many years). The awards are called ZeBBies.
To organise and manage the awards an Awards Committee has been established which reports to the Board of the Guild which in turn reports to the members at the Annual General Meeting.
All interpretation of these rules and regulations rests with the Board of the Guild.
In each year the Board will publish on-line, on the Guild web-site, the list of scripts and their writers that can be nominated. There are four categories, 1) best script for theatre, 2) best script for film 3) best script for television and 4) best script for radio. Scripts nominated in any of these categories may be of any length and in any language; must be written by an Irish (north or south) writer/s or a writer/s normally resident in Ireland (north or south); and released to the public in an Irish premiere between 1st July of the year previous to, and 30th June of the year of the awards ceremony.
The Board of the Guild will publish the list on line at the Guild website and invite nominations from members within a specific timescale.
For the 2007 ZeBBies the list will be published on Monday 10th September.
Nominations will be in writing or by e-mail. Each member of the Guild (full or associate) may submit only one nomination form and may nominate up to three scripts from any or all of the four categories. A decision as to whether a person is a member in good standing and therefore eligible to nominate and vote rests with the Board of the guild.
Additionally the Awards Committee will invite up to thirty professionals in each of the four categories to nominate three scripts in that category.
For the 2007 ZeBBies nominations close on Friday 21st September 2007 at 17.00.
The Awards Committee of the Guild will establish a short list of three scripts in each category based on the nominations received from members and from the panels of professionals.
The short-listed scripts will subsequently be announced by the Awards Committee, at which time they will also be published in PDF format on the website. Between the date when the nominations close and the short-lists are announced writers have to agree to their scripts being short-listed and the owner of the script has to give permission for the publication of the script on the website and provide a digital copy which can be turned into a PDF file. Should a writer not consent to be short-listed or be unable to get permission for the publication of that script then the Awards Committee will substitute an alternate script from the nominees, subject to it completing the requirements above.
Voting is restricted to members of the Guild (associate or full) based on their reading of the short-listed scripts. Decisions as to whether an individual is entitled to vote in the event of any disagreement will be made by the Board of the Guild. Votes will be collected and stored by the staff of the Guild.
For the 2007 ZeBbies voting will commence on or around Monday 8th October.
For the 2007 ZeBBies voting will close on Monday 29th October at 17.00.
The Guild awards sub-committee will oversee the counting of the votes (and will be sworn to secrecy).
The awards ceremony will be organised by the Awards Committee of the Guild.
For the 2007 ZeBBies the ceremony will be take place on Tuesday 6th of November.
At the discretion of the Board of the Guild there may be further ZeBBies awarded.
In the event of any disputes about the interpretation of these rules or any other matters pertaining to the ZeBBies awards the decision of the Board of the Guild will be final.
