Galway Fleadh Masterclass

17th June 2011 by Maura McHugh

Galway Film Fleadh 2011The Galway Film Fleadh in association with IFTA are delighted to announce the Screenwriter-in-Residence programme: Gill Dennis is a man who ‘knows that the way to learn is to listen, and to ask the questions that will find the heart of the subject. He starts at the heart of his subject, no matter how difficult and moves to the center with unerring accuracy. He’s an expert communicator, which serves him both as a teacher and writer.’.

Gill studied screenwriting with Frank Daniel at The American Film Institute and in the past ten years, he has mentored over a new generation of filmmakers there, including Jonathan Levine (The Wackness), Jacob Estes (Mean Creek) and Goran Dukic (Wristcutters). He has also conducted workshops throughout the US, Europe and Australia. His work covers all genres from the multi-award-winning story of Johnny Cash in Walk The Line (2005) to the cult classic Return To Oz (1985) and many others along the way. Gill’s tremendous talent drew the attention of some of Hollywood’s finest, such as Francis Ford Coppola, Sam Peckinpah, James Mangold, Caleb Deschanel, Ed Harris, Azazel Jacobs, Frank Pierson, and Victor Nunez and he was asked to work on scripts as diverse as Apocalypse Now, Pollock and The Black Stallion.

Gill is currently Master Filmmaker in Residence at the American Film Institute.

Gill Dennis’s writing credits include:

He wrote the documentaries The Man on Lincoln’s Nose (2001) and A Few Notes On Our Food Problem (1968), both nominated for Long Form Academy Awards. He has two screenplays presently in pre-production; Spanish Blood (written with the director Azazel Jacobs) and Forever (written with the director Tatia Pilieva).

In other guises, he played the Sergeant in Azazel Jacobs’ The Good Times Kid (2005) and has won the L.A. Drama Critics Circle Award for Distinguished Direction in theatre.

Gill will be giving us an insight into his collaborating and rewriting skills whilst also focusing on how stories are discovered, discussed and structurally examined. He will be giving a masterclass for screenwriters (script editors and producers are also invited to attend) at this year’s fleadh as well as giving one-on-one consults to individual screenwriters.

The Master Class will take place at 2pm on Wednesday the 6th of July: in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Galway and costs €50. For further information or to apply for a place, contact Brónagh Keys at 091-562200 or email: masterclasses@galwayfilmfleadh.com

Please note places are limited. Deadline for applications: Friday the 24th of June.

Gearrscannáin 2011

14th June 2011 by Maura McHugh

GearrscannainScéim nua í ‘Gearrscannáin’ a bhfuil sé mar sprioc aici gearrscannáin as Gaeilge a sholáthar, a mbeidh tarraingt acu do lucht féachana ginearálta. Tá sé mar chuspóir ag an scéim go spreagfaí stiúrthóirí úra chun dul i bpriacal, chun dushlán a thabhairt don lucht féachana agus chun téamaí suimiúla a rachaidh i bhfeidhm orthu a chur os a gcomhair. Cé gur chóir go mbeidh sé mar aidhm ag na scannáin freastal ar lucht féachana fairsing, ba chóir go mbeidh siad in ann grádú ‘faoi 15′ a bhaint amach. Ní mór gur bunscéalta as Gaeilge atá sna hiarratais. Ní ghlacfar le gearrscannáin a cuireadh chuig BSÉ/IFB i mBéarla cheana. Déanfar an scéim a sholáthar ar-líne den chuid is mó.

Is é an 8ú Íúil an spriocdháta don scéim ‘Gearrscannáin’

Líon na scannán 2
Fad: Timpeall 8 nóiméad
Buiséad: Uasmhéid de €10,000 in aghaidh an scannáin
Formáid: Aon fhormáid dhigiteach d’ardchaighdeán
Teanga: Gaeilge

Cé atá i dteideal

Tá an scéim seo oscailte roimh scannánóirí arbh fhéidir leo cumas iarratas a dhéanamh: stiúrthóireachta drámaíochta a thaispeáint, ach nach bhfuil gearrscannáin déanta acu cheana féin ach amháin sa choláiste. Má bhaineann iarratasóirí úsáid as seóspól an choláiste is ar éigean go raibh ról ábhartha acu sa ghearrscannán sin, i.e. má chuireann siad iarratas isteach mar stiúrthóir is ar éigean gur stiúraigh siad an gearrscannán atá le feiceáil ar an seóspól a théann leis an iarratas.

Níl an scéim seo oscailte roimh mic léinn lánaimseartha.

Nós Imeachta:

Ba chóir foirmeacha iarratais a íoslódáil ó láithreán gréasáin BSÉ/IFB, ba chóir iad a chomhlánú ina n-iomlán agus iad a sheoladh – maraon leis na hábhair bhreise ar fad atá á n-iarraidh – chuig ceannáras BSÉ/IFB i nGaillimh. (Ní féidir cur isteach ar mhaoiniú BSÉ/IFB ar facs nó ar líne). Ní dhéanfar próiseáil ar iarratais neamhiomlána.

Déanfaidh grúpa meastóirí a cuirfidh BSÉ/IFB le chéile go hinmheánach agus go seachtrach na hiarratais a mheas, agus déanfaidh siad breithniú ar an scríbhneoireacht scripte agus ar an bhfoireann chruthaitheach.

Cearta:

Fánfaidh cearta eisiacha sna meáin in Éirinn agus cearta neamh-eisiacha spreagtha sa chuid eile den domhan le BSÉ. Fanfaidh na cearta eile ar fad leis an scannánóir.

Gnéithe Thábhachtacha na Scéime

Go ginearálta, ba chóir go gcuirfidh tallann Éireannach tús le scannáin faoin scéim ‘Gearrscannán’, agus ba chóir go mbeadh tallann Éireannach nó daoine atá ina gcónaí in Éirinn i gceannas go cruthaitheach orthu, agus go ndéanfar bainistiú orthu ó Éirinn.

Do thionscnaimh roghnaithe b’éigean do léiritheoirí na cearta ar fad ar fud na cruinne a shealbhú, gan teorainn ama agus sna meáin ar fad.

Ní cheadófaí ach léiritheoir amháin agus ní thugfaí creidiúnt ach do léiritheoir amháin do thionscnaimh roghnaithe.

Beidh na rátaí seo leanas i bhfeidhm maidir le buiséid léiriúcháin na scannán ar fad a dhéanfaí faoin scéim:

- Ráta laethúil d’aisteoirí agus do chriú (mar a aontaítear go bliantúil le Grúpa Scannán na gCeardchumann) Meitheamh 2011-Meitheamh 2012: €120

Beidh cearta faomhaithe ag BSÉ/IFB maidir leis na heilimintí seo leanas de scannáin a dhéantar faoin scéim:

  • Script scannánaithe (agus is féidir le BSÉ/IFB eagarthóir scripte a cheapadh i gcásanna áirithe)
  • Roghnú aisteoirí
  • Príomh-fhoireann theicniúil
