4th October 2010 by Maura McHugh

The Douglas Hyde Conference 2010 is titled Inside Creativity: Education, Innovation, Economy, & Society, and is the second of three Hyde Conferences looking at the Creative Sector.

Roscommon County Council Arts Office and the Western Development Commission will bring together artists, academics, politicians, commentators and public bodies to investigate four different topics separately examining four distinct roles of creativity in society.

The conference will be opened by Mary Hanafin, TD, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport and chaired by poet and broadcaster, Theo Dorgan.

This year, most of the conference will take place on one day, Friday 15th October.

The following morning, Saturday 16th, a special wreath laying ceremony will take place at the graveside of Douglas Hyde at the nearby Douglas Hyde Centre to commemorate the 150th anniversary of his birth.

This will be followed by a lecture by Dr. Roy Johnston on the life and work of the painter Roderic O’Conor, who was also born 150 years ago, near Castleplunkett, Co. Roscommon, five miles from Hyde’s birthplace.

More information on the conference is available on the web ste.
