From Idea to Script

10th September 2010 by Maura McHugh

Galway Film CentreThe Galway Film Centre is offering a course entitled From Idea to Script running from 6.30pm to 9pm on the Tuesday evening for six weeks, starting on the 5th of October. It costs €225 unwaged/ €255 waged (These fees include membership to the Centre for the year), and the tutor is Ivan McMahon:

This course is for those who have an idea for a short film and want to put it on paper. Working closely with an experienced tutor, you will be guided through traditional screenplay structure, writing exercises, pitching your idea and group readings of your work. There will also be a talk on what is the next step to take, once you have written your script.

The tutor is available by email every week to look at participants’ rewrites. To get the most out of this course, you should have time between each class to write. There will be a fortnight long break between class 4 & 5 and class 5 & 6 to allow participants more time to work on their scripts. Any good screenplay requires work and effort and this course can help you to establish a weekly writing routine. The results can be very rewarding.

We encourage participants to email each other with their work during the week. A lot can be learned from looking at how someone else writes and also, writing is often a very solo profession where writers sometimes miss the perspective of another’s opinion. Similarly, the tutor will give feedback each week in class on everybody’s work so it is much more beneficial if you have read that work beforehand.

Class sizes are kept small so that everyone’s work gets plenty of attention and tea/coffee are provided during the break.

Due to the class size applicants are advised to apply for a place as soon as possible. Information on how to apply for the course is on the web site.
